Goals

As I've mentioned before, Meghan was an avid list-maker. When she first finished treatments in 2009, Meghan made a list of goals that she hoped to achieve throughout her life. Some were small, some were big, but all were attainable. Meghan was working her way through this list when she was re-diagnosed in late January 2010...she had no intention of stopping, and added more to the list.

After Meghan passed away in April 2010, I decided I wanted to finish her list. Since then, I've been incorporating her goals into my life. As of June 2012, I have completed ten goals. In some cases, I've gone on to create a new goal -- such as running a marathon (October 2011) after completing a half-marathon (July 2011). In other cases, Meghan's goals are things I've already done, such as visiting a certain number of countries. For those goals, I'm not counting my past experience, but moving forward from where Meghan was in her progress.

See the blog entries below for a detailed list of the Meghan's goals. Updates/progress are noted in bold.

So.... here we go- (Thursday, September 10, 2009)
Life Goals...
1) To hold a PhD, I'm not too picky on what it is going to be in. The way I am going though, I think it's bound to be nursing.(Adam's progress: Graduated with a BA in Linguistics, May 2012! Applying to grad programs for Fall 2013)
2) To learn another language. I've got a head start on Korean and French, I just need to get motivated enough to do it.
3) To master at least one of the following musical instruments - cornet, cello, piano, or guitar.
4) To live in at least 5 different countries - So far I've only got Canada and Korea. I'm assuming that I will have United States in the near future (preferably San Fran, DC, Portland and Maine). I'm thinking somewhere in Europe and in South America?(Adam's progress: #1: India, Sept-Dec 2010)
5) To run a half marathon. I've a lot of training to do though, seeing as the 5km I ran today was far from easy. (Completed by Adam July 15, 2011 in Tobermory, Canada)
6) Spend at least 100 hours volunteering. (Note*** So far I'm up to 40h :)) (Adam's progress: finished Oct. 1, 2 010)
7) Master the following- sewing, knitting & crocheting (Note*** on my way with knitting/sewing, kinda sorta)
8) Become part owner of a Bed & Breakfast (with Adam)
9) Travel to 30 countries. I'm at 7 now. (Adam's progress: 11 countries as of June 2012)
10) Read at least 12 books a year until I die (Textbooks NOT included). Adam's progress, updated & linked on the resources page.
11) Complete 'The Weekend to End Breast Cancer' 60km walk in Toronto. Sept 11-12.
12) Own a little cottage by a lake.

New Goals (February 2010)
1) Take the train across Canada (Completed  by Adam, August 10, 2010)
2) Go to an NHL game (don't really care where, I just want to go) (Completed by Meghan, March 6, 2010 in Ottawa)
3) Make Peter take me (and friends) to a Blue Jays game... I don't really have any interest in baseball, but I think it would be fun. (Completed by Adam, August 11, 2010)
4) Go to the Symphony. (Completed by Meghan, February 20, 2010 in Toronto)
5) Get married (hahaha, um... no pressure Adam)  (Completed March 28, 2010 in Petrolia)
6) Go to Canada's Wonderland with my friends/family
7) Take a road trip back to Maine
8) Go snowshoeing (Completed by Adam, February 2011)
9) Go ice-skating on the Rideau Canal
10) Get my darn tooth fixed
11) Get some darn shiny nice new glasses
12) I've always wanted to go to Ireland with my father... it's been a dream of mine since I was just a little girl. My father has been, and he loved it. I would love to share this with him while I still can. I don't think I'm ready to let go of this dream yet.
13) See the northern lights.
14) Travel to India to volunteer with children. (Completed by Adam, September-December 2010)

I absolutely LOVE that you are completing her goals. While watching your story on godvine tonight, I couldn't help but cry. In fact I still am. To have a love like that, that didn't die with her, that lives on is honestly just amazing! Just don't give up, they may be hard to complete but just knowing that you did this for her is remarkable! God Bless

Adam, amazing and inspiring. Cancer touches the lives of just about everyone. I lost my father and older brother and think your passion to complete her list is one of the most positives ways I have ever seen anyone honor a loved one. Best of luck to your adventure and may God lighten the pain with each line you cross off. thank you for sharing your story. therese

Hey Adam,

I hope that you are still doing well in completing the goals. Such a beautiful love that you had for her. You are wonderful and an inspiration.

Matt Kuckkahn said...

She is still alive in you, she walks with you through all of this, she has never left you. If you look into your heart, when it is open, you feel this.

I want to share with you a story, by Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk who lost his mom:

-Finding a Lost Loved One-

The same thing happens when we lost any of our beloved ones. When conditions are not right to support life, they withdraw. When I lost my mother I suffered a lot. When we are only seven or eight years old it is difficult to think that one day we will lose our mother. Eventually we grow up and we all lose our mothers, but if you know how to practice, when the time comes for the separation you will not suffer too much. You will very quickly realize that your mother is always alive within you.

The day my mother died, I wrote in my journal, "A serious misfortune of my life has arrived." I suffered for more than one year after the passing away of my mother. But one night, in the highlands of Vietnam, I was sleeping in the hut in my hermitage. I dreamed of my mother. I saw myself sitting with her, and we were having a wonderful talk. She looked young and beautiful, her hair flowing down. It was so pleasant to sit there and talk to her as if she had never died. When I woke up it was about two in the morning, and I felt very strongly that I had never lost my mother. The impression that my mother was still with me was very clear. I understood then that the idea of having lost my mother was just an idea. It was obvious in that moment that my mother is always alive in me.

I opened the door and went outside. The entire hillside was bathed in moonlight. It was a hill covered with tea plants, and my hut was set behind the temple halfway up. Walking slowly in the moonlight through the rows of tea plants, I noticed my mother was still with me. She was the moonlight caressing me as she had done so often, very tenderly, very sweet... wonderful! Each time my feet touched the earth I knew my mother was there with me. I knew this body was not mine along but a living continuation of my mother and father and my grandparents and great-grandparents. Of all my ancestors. These feet that I saw as "my" feet were actually "our" feet. Together my mother and I were leaving footprints in the damp soil.

From that moment on the idea that I had lost my mother no longer existed. All I had to do was look at the palm of my hand, feel the breeze on my face or the earth under my feet to remember that my mother is always with me, available at any time.

When you lost a loved one, you suffer. but if you know how to look deeply, you have a chance to realize that his or her nature is truly the nature of no birth, no death. There is manifestation and there is the cessation of manifestation in order to have another manifestation. You have to be very keen and very alert in order to recognize the new manifestation of just one person. But with practice and with effort you can do it.

So, taking the hand of someone who knows the practice, together do walking meditation. Pay attention to all the leaves, the flowers, the birds and the dewdrops. If you can stop and look deeply, you will be able to recognize your beloved one manifesting again and again in different forms. You will again embrace the joy of life.
